Record
Nicolas, a student from the TC department, went to Canada.
My name's Nicolas, I'm 23 years old.
I had the opportunity to leave in Canada for 6 months, for a semester abroad.
When did you start preparing your departure to Canada ?
I thought leaving to Canada even before the first year in DUT.
When I was 19, i went to the USA for 2 months during hollidays to work as a monitor in an aquatic centre then as an advisor in a « Visitor Center » in Santa Barbara, California.
I've benefited to visit the Canadian west coast, from Seattle to Vancouver to reach the Alaska's border. I really liked Canada and I told myself that maybe I should go for a longer duration.
How did you obtain your student VISA for Canada ?
I've made some researches on this point, because the Canada's government website wasn't really clear on the need to have a student VISA for a single semester. After plenty of researches, it turned out that the student VISA wasn't necessary in the mesure I wanted to stay for less than 6 months and I didn't want to work in a company.
I also went without any VISA, and they gave me a temporar stay VISA at my arrival in the airport for a duration of 6 months.
Be careful, even if the VISA isn't necessary before your departure, be sure to have all the documents to prove your admission at a Canadian establishment for the duration of your stay. When you'll arrive to the airport, the customs wont hesitate and will browse every documents you've got and also ask you some questions on your ability to fund your stay.
Have you obtained scholarship fund for your studies in Canada ?
I'm not scholarship holder based on the CROUS criterias, so I didn't have any financial help on social criterias. I know the region can help with some grants but I didn't search for more.
Which fly have you reserve for going in Canada ?
I bought my flight ticket on Air Transat, which is one of the cheapest company to go in Canada. In the measure that I waited the last moment before buying it, it was quite expensive, around 950 euros.
Have you reserved a housing before going to Canada ?
Like everyone, I was scared of leaving without find my apartment. So I started my researches in France and I registered on Facebook groups to find a housing fast. There's a lot of announces on the websites, and I found a week before my departure a room in a housing of 7 persons. Then, when I arrived this was the housing I chose !
En revanche, il ne faut pas se reposer sur les résidences étudiantes de l’université, qui ont énormément de règles contraignantes.
How was your arriving in Canada ?
I arrived at the August beginning, and I passed the first 3 days by visiting Montreal with a friend.
Have you made travels during your semester in Canada ?
Yes I managed to travel ! I even made my "group" of friends while traveling. Someone posted an announced to go into Detroit for September. We were 4 students to leave in Detroit (a Belgian, un Dane and a French girl), and it's became my "close friend group" for the semester.
To do it short, I managed to go during the semester :
- A weekend in a cottage by a lake in the Canadian wild.
- In Quebec and in Montreal to discover the Quebecker's province.
- In the USA from the west coast of San Francisco to Las Vegas.
What was your budget for this journey ?
- Housing : 300 euros by month. For a 15 square meters room in a house of 7 people. I was unfortunately quite far away from the campus (10 min in bus).
- Food : 350 euros by month. By doing some restorants every months.
- Fly : 950 euros. Took a month before, a little bit late to get the best price.
- Insurance : Thanks to my card VISA Premier, I was assured on place.
- Travels : 400 euros by months. I was leaving a lot every week-end and doing some quite far travels.
- Going out : 200 euros by months. I was going out a lot every weekends, which has a certain cost !
